Quick reference: 15% = average, 18% = standard, 20% = good service, 25%+ = exceptional.
How much to tip
Tipping norms in the US: 15% is considered minimal for adequate service, 18-20% is the standard for good service, and 25% or more for exceptional service. Many restaurants now suggest 20%, 25%, and 30% on receipts; that does not mean those are required, just suggested. International tipping varies wildly. Most of Europe rounds up or adds 10% for great service; Japan does not tip at all.
Tipping math, simplified
- 10%: move the decimal one place left ($50 bill = $5 tip)
- 15%: double the 10%, then add half of it ($50 = $5 + $2.50 = $7.50)
- 20%: double the 10% ($50 = $10)
- 25%: divide bill by 4 ($50 = $12.50)
Splitting a bill
Add the tip first, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does it automatically. Standard etiquette is to split evenly unless one person clearly ordered much more (in which case calculate their share separately).
Should you tip on tax?
Generally, no. Tip on the pre-tax subtotal. But if you are rounding up generously, the difference is small and most servers appreciate it.
