Time Duration Calculator
How long between start and end? Type two times, get the duration in hours, minutes, and totals.
Calculate the time between a start and end time. Outputs hours, minutes, and a clean readable duration. Check the "next day" toggle for overnight shifts. Useful for shift tracking, project time logs, and figuring out how long something actually took.
Examples: 09:15 → 12:00 = 2h 45m · 22:30 → 06:15 (next day) = 7h 45m
How to handle overnight shifts
If your end time is earlier than your start time, like clocking in at 10 PM and clocking out at 6 AM, check the "Next day" box. Without it, the calculator can't tell whether you mean an 8-hour overnight shift or a typo. With it checked, the math correctly treats the end time as the following calendar day.
What the outputs mean
- Duration: formatted as hours and minutes (e.g., "7h 45m"). The most readable.
- Total minutes: the duration expressed entirely in minutes (e.g., 465). Useful for billing or detailed time tracking.
- Total hours: the duration expressed as a decimal number of hours (e.g., 7.75). Useful for payroll calculations where time is tracked in fractional hours.
Common uses
Hourly workers tracking shift hours for payroll. Lawyers, consultants, and freelancers logging billable time. Parents calculating nap or feeding intervals. Athletes measuring rest periods. Travelers figuring out total flight time including layovers. Anytime you need to know how long something actually took.
